Because everyone has different tastes, Planetography offers flexibility in the configuration of your print. We offer a variety of options that keep configuration straight-forward, but still accommodate different styles.

Additionally, each image is enhanced when all factors, including the frame, mat, and glass work with the image. Some images are formal, some casual, and the frame should take this into account. And the mat colors should help bring out the colors in the image. Neither the frame nor the mat should be a distraction from the image itself. They serve the sole purpose to enhance the image.

When an image is added to the shopping cart, it starts with a default configuration which generally works for any printed image. This includes a print mounted on mount board, a black metal frame, a white-on-white mat, and standard glass. This set of options represents a reasonable balance between cost and a professional look.

Prints may optionally be custom configured using the Change button next to each thumbnail image on the Shopping Cart page. Note that each shopping cart entry has its own Change button, and configures only that print. To configure multiple prints, use the Change button next to each individual thumbnail image in the cart.

The price of a print can be greatly affected by the options selected. In general, wood frames are more expensive than metal ones, and a matted print is more expensive than an unmatted one. The least expensive option is to purchase a matted print with no frame. You would have to frame the print yourself in this case. Different glass options can significantly increase the cost.

Changing Configuration Options       Top of Page

You can change the following options on your print:
Print Size and Proportion
Framing and Matting
Mat Board and Mat Color
Frame Types and Colors
Glass and Lamination Options

To configure a print, press the Change button in the Shopping Cart for the print you would like to customize. Note that since it is possible to have the same image in the shopping cart more than once, you may customize each one independently.

Within the Configure page, not all options are always required, depending on other selections. For example, if you choose to only mat a print, you will not have to select frame or glass options. Options that do not apply to the current settings will show --Not Applicable--. Options that do apply, but have not been selected, will show --Make Selection--.

You can clear options that you have set by using the Use Defaults button. See Using the Default Configuration

Artist's Choice Configuration       Top of Page

For some images, Planetography has selected frame and mat combinations that work together with the image, and help to enhance the colors found on it. You can select our choices from the Configure page. You get to the Configure page by clicking on the Change button on the Shopping Cart page. Once on the Configure page for a print, you can click on the Artist's Choice button to use our selections.

An artist's choice selection includes:
a matted, framed print
selected inner and outer mat colors
selected frame type and color

When you select artist's choice, the options that we have set are locked. To unlock these options, you can use the Use Defaults button, which will unlock the fields and return the print to the defaults for all prints. When artist's choice is in effect you may set the:
image size
glass
finish

Not all images have an artists choice with them. If there is no artists choice available, the Default Configuration is used.

NOTE: Making mat choices is a very difficult process, especially on the web, since most computers display only approximations to the actual colors available in mat board, frames, and prints. The situation is much complicated by the differences between the RBG color space, CMYK, color space, and characteristics of the physical media. Setting artist's choice is the only way to utilize an inner and outer mat color other than the default.

Using the Default Configuration       Top of Page

The default configuration is a set of options selected to coordinate with any print. The selections are neutral in color. They are also a fairly low cost set of options. When you use the default options, you are choosing:
off-white double mat
black metal frame
premium glass

All prints are configured with the default configuration when they are initially added to the shopping cart. Prints can be purchased this way, or they can be configured by clicking on the Change button next to the thumbnail image on the Shopping Cart page.

You can return to the default configuration at any time by going to the Configure page via the Change button on the shopping cart, and then clicking on the Use Defaults button on the Configure page. See the next section on applying changes.

Print Only Configuration       Top of Page

When you select the Print Only configuration, you are ordering a print that has not been mounted, matted or framed. You still have the option of having it laminated. The print will be delivered rolled up in a tube.

Applying Changes       Top of Page

You may change your selections at anytime until you finalize your purchase. You must use the Apply button on the Configure page for your changes to take effect. Once you have decided on your choices, click on the Apply button. The new choices will be stored in your local cookie, the price of the new configuration will be calculated and you will be returned to the Shopping Cart page.

Remember that changes you make on the Configure page only apply to a single print from the shopping cart. Each print is configured separately. If you have the same print in the shopping cart more than once, you may configure each one separately if you prefer to customize the print.
